Residential Refuse Pick-Up

DPW picks up residential refuse weekly.

DPW picks up your trash once a week based on the pick-up schedule. Please be considerate of your neighbors when placing your trash at the curb and help us maintain efficient, low cost service by adhering to the following guidelines when preparing and placing your trash out for pick-up:

  • Place trash between the sidewalk and the curb no earlier than 6:00 pm the day before and no later than 7:00 am the day of your regularly scheduled pick-up day
  • Remove containers from the curb within 12 hours after they are emptied
  • Trash must be placed in proper containers
  • Garbage cans shall be no larger than 35 gallons in size
  • Each container shall weigh no more than 50 pounds each
  • Each garbage can shall be properly sealed
  • There is a limit of 6 standard 35 gallon cans of refuse per week per pick-up
  • Containers and trash must not be stored in front of property, rather along side or in the rear of property out of public site
  • Landlords are responsible for the failure of tenants to comply with refuse rules and are responsible for all special pick-up fees
  • Refuse from outside the village is not allowed
  • You may request an extra trash pick-up if necessary for an additional charge by contacting the DPW to make special arrangements

Household Hazardous Waste

DPW cannot pick-up hazardous waste.

The DPW cannot pick-up hazardous or infectious waste of any kind. Some paints and other hazardous materials, such as cleaners, degreasers, automotive fluids, pesticides, fertilizers, driveway sealers, propane tanks, pool chemicals, some batteries, syringes, sharps, cooking oils and greases, etc. can be brought to the Monroe County Hazardous Waste Facility by calling 753-7600 Monday through Friday 9:00 am - 4:00 pm for an appointment. We also participate in an annual Household Hazardous Waste Collection Day with Perinton, Pittsford, and Fairport at a time to be announced each summer.

Unacceptable Refuse

In addition to hazardous waste, DPW cannot pick-up these items:

The DPW cannot pick-up:

  • tires
  • junk cars
  • drums containing any liquid
  • hazardous or infectious waste

EAST ROCHESTER VOLUNTEER FIRE DEPARTMENT--125 YEARS OF SERVICE

EAST ROCHESTER VOLUNTEER FIRE DEPARTMENT--125 YEARS OF SERVICE Read more

On May 23, 1898, a group of businessmen from Despatch (as East Rochester was known until 1906) met at Branshaud’s Hall on East Commercial Street to set up the first fire department.  On May 29th, the first official meeting was held, and the Despatch Fire District was formed.  During subsequent meetings committees were formed to find estimates for needed equipment, as well as for property and a fire hall.  It was determined that $1800.00 was the amount needed to outfit this first department.  Equipment included:  one dozen rubber coats, boots, and helmets, a hose cart, an alarm bell, a ladder truck, and three chemical carts.  Needless to say, the first fire trucks were either pulled by horses or pulled by hand.
