Community Recycling

Help make our town a better place by recycling.

DPW picks up your recycling blue box once each week on the same day as your scheduled trash pick-up. You must maintain your own blue box which can be purchased at Village Hall for the small fee of $9.00. When placing your recyclables at the curb for pick-up please do the following:

  • Place only proper recyclable materials in your blue box at the curb no earlier than 6:00 pm the day before and no later than 7:00 am on your regularly scheduled pick-up day
  • Remove your empty blue box from the curb within 12 hours after it is emptied
  • Place papers on the bottom of the box with cans and bottles on top; this will help reduce the chance for papers to scatter in the wind
  • Do not place trash or any other nonrecyclable items in your blue box as the DPW will be unable to remove your recycling for the week
  • If your recyclable do not fit in your blue box place all paper items in a separate paper bag next to your blue box; please do not use plastic bags
  • Blue boxes must not be stored in front of property, rather along side or in the rear of property out of public site
  • Landlords are responsible for the failure of tenants to comply with recycling rules and are responsible for all associated fines for non-compliance
  • Recycling materials from outside the village are not allowed

How and What to Recycle in Monroe County

Many different things can be recycled!

The following containers, paper materials and license plates (defaced) should be placed in your recycling box and taken to the curb on your regular trash collection day.

Only the containers listed below are accepted for recycling. All containers should be rinsed and placed loosely on the top of paper items in your recycling bin. Please do not separate the types of containers using plastic grocery bags—they should all be mixed together. Labels are accepted.

  • Metal Food and Beverage Cans: lids are accepted.
  • EMPTY Aerosol Cans: remove and throw away caps. NO pesticides or spray paints.
  • Plastic Bottles, Jugs and Jars (#1 - 7): remove and throw away caps, spray pumps and lids. No motor oil containers.
  • Glass Bottles and Jars: Clear, Green and Brown ONLY—remove and throw away all lids and caps. No drinking glasses, window glass, etc.
  • Gable Top (Milk & Juice) Cartons and Drink Boxes: remove and throw away plastic straws.

Paper items may be kept together by using a brown paper bag (except for holding shredded paper, do not use plastic bags). Almost any kind of clean paper product can be placed in the recycling bin. NO soiled papers, paper toweling or wet paper.

Some examples:

  • Newspapers, Magazines, Catalogs, etc.
  • Corrugated Cardboard: flattened, 2x4 feet maximum—if you have a large stack of flattened boxes, it should be tied together with string or twine.
  • Phone Directories
  • Paper Boxes—cereal, cracker, soda, tissue, shoe, gift, toy, etc.: discard plastic liners and flatten.
  • Pizza Boxes: discard all contents and flatten.
  • Junk Mail, Advertisements & Brochures
  • Home Office Paper, Files, School Papers, etc.: shredded paper in clear plastic bags only.

EAST ROCHESTER VOLUNTEER FIRE DEPARTMENT--125 YEARS OF SERVICE

EAST ROCHESTER VOLUNTEER FIRE DEPARTMENT--125 YEARS OF SERVICE Read more

On May 23, 1898, a group of businessmen from Despatch (as East Rochester was known until 1906) met at Branshaud’s Hall on East Commercial Street to set up the first fire department.  On May 29th, the first official meeting was held, and the Despatch Fire District was formed.  During subsequent meetings committees were formed to find estimates for needed equipment, as well as for property and a fire hall.  It was determined that $1800.00 was the amount needed to outfit this first department.  Equipment included:  one dozen rubber coats, boots, and helmets, a hose cart, an alarm bell, a ladder truck, and three chemical carts.  Needless to say, the first fire trucks were either pulled by horses or pulled by hand.
