According to a number of area sportscasters, it wasn’t supposed to happen that way—the East Rochester Bombers beating the Lyons Lions, 58-57. While both basketball teams entered the game undefeated, Lyons was known as a powerhouse. By looking at the history of the two teams, however, perhaps March 24, 1962, was destined to be different. And what made the outcome of the contest all the more special was that it happened before a crowd estimated to be more than 10,000.
It began on February 17, 1927—the first Girl Scout meeting held in East Rochester. The movement begun by Julliette Low in Savannah, Georgia, in 1912 spread quickly all over the country with the first troop organized in Rochester in 1918.

Throughout the year I will share monthly articles (around the 15th of the month) which will serve to honor special moments in our history. Some of my columns will review highlights already shared, some will present new information learned along the way. Readers who wish to comment may contact me at email@example.com.
1952 Masons Little League Team
In December we often find ourselves reflecting on the year gone by. Perhaps it was because of the memories of the 1989 movie, “Field of Dreams.” Perhaps it was because the Chicago White Sox beat the New York Yankees, 9 -8 in the ninth inning this summer at the Field of Dreams site in Dyersville, Iowa. This year our Local History Department received many requests for photos and articles on Little League teams of the 1950s and 60s. While we have many articles about teams and individual games, we have few team photos. I did discover some interesting facts, however.
Town/Village of East Rochester Launches New Citizen Engagement Mobile App
The Town/Village is making customer service, and engaging with our citizens, a priority moving forward. To help us accomplish this objective, we are excited to announce that we are partnering with GOGov, a government software company, to launch a new free mobile application for our community called "East Rochester Connect”!
Residents will be able to submit service requests on the fly from their smartphones or on the web and access important city information regarding events, alerts and more. If a question arises, municipal workers will be able to have direct communication with residents to resolve issues together.
"East Rochester Connect” will feature access to the following Town/Village resources:
- Submit Requests/Concerns with the easy access “Start Request” button
- Provide multiple photos when submitting a request
- Track requests and send messages to Municipal Staff regarding the status of a request
- Access Frequently Asked Questions through the fully searchable knowledge base
To download the free app, go to the Apple App Store or Google Play Store and search “"East Rochester Connect”” to find the app.
