Harold Danko will perform a solo piano concert

Event date: 2/29/2020 7:30 PM - 9:00 PM Export event

Jazz pianist and composer Harold Danko will perform a solo piano concert featuring original compositions at his unique "Quadrennial Event" on Saturday, February 29 at 7:30 p.m. at the Piano Works Mall, 349 West Commercial Street, East Rochester, NY.  Admission is $10 for Adults and $5 for Seniors and Students.

The "Quadrennial Event" tradition was inaugurated in 1980 at the Jazz Gallery in New York City, and continued at legendary New York jazz clubs such as Birdland and the Five Spot before nesting in Rochester at the Little Theatre Café in 2000 and 2004, and at Venu-Resto Lounge in 2008.  More recently in 2012 and 2016 it was held at the Eastman School of Music in solo piano, duo, and quintet formats.

This year in the atrium of the historic Piano Works Mall in East Rochester, he will play on a hand-made Shigeru Kawai grand piano supplied by Denton, Collier & Daniels Pianos and tell stories about his five decade career.  An exhibit of works by artist Mark McDermott will also take place in the atrium as well as presentations by the Rochester Music Hall of Fame, East Rochester Department of Local History, and the mall's management and tenants.

Harold thinks of himself  as a composing improviser (or improvising composer, depending on mood) and is honored that his eleventh leap year event is being hosted at the Piano Works Mall in his newly adopted hometown of East Rochester, NY.  He has celebrated February 29s for special performances for forty years, the idea being to serve up an evening of his own compositions, particularly after some reflection during the intervening four years. He has described these events as instantly nostalgic (at least for himself) and boasts that his quadrennial concerts remain "the slowest-growing cult event of modern times".

Danko is well recognized from long-term associations with impressive jazz legends, including Chet Baker, Gerry Mulligan, Thad Jones/Mel Lewis, Lee Konitz, and Woody Herman, and in performances at major jazz venues throughout the world, as well as on recordings, television, and videos.  During the last three decades he has become increasingly known as a band leader, composer, and solo pianist, and is documented in those capacities on more than thirty CDs on the SteepleChase and SunnySide labels as well as in further international travels.  He holds Professor Emeritus status at the Eastman School of Music, where he taught for nineteen years and chaired the jazz department for 11 years.
